Some years ago , I was invited to a dinner in a kampong with a group of friends . We were served a typical home-prepared meal . We sat down with the host and his family . As we were eating , the hostess told us this story :
" My daughter plays with the chickens everyday. She treats them as her pets . When we slaughter the chickens for meals , she will always cry. The chickens are so beautiful . Why do you kill and eat them ? Let them run around the garden . Isn't it better ? I love to play with them. They are my friends. "
I was touched at that moment. However , I continued eating. That anecdote made a permanent impression on my mind .
Now , on reflection , I understand her pain and sympathise with her. That little kampong girl indeed has a tender heart. If you are playing with those lovely creatures everyday, you actually feel for them as you would feel for your friends . Would you bear to kill those beautiful creature friends of yours for food?
There is indeed a lesson to learn from this young kampong child about kindness , something I think many urban folks find it difficult to grasp .
